Southampton appointed Mark Hughes as their new manager until the end of the season on Wednesday night, and Saints fans will not like what former Stoke City defender Marc Wilson said about the former Potters boss’ training techniques back in August 2016.The south coast outfit decided to bring the 54-year-old back to the club he played for between 1998-2000 following a run of just one win in 17 Premier League matches under former boss Mauricio Pellegrino, which has left them just one point above the relegation zone and in real danger of slipping into the Championship.[ad_pod ]The Welshman, who could bring out-of-favour striker Manolo Gabbiadini back into the fold, is experienced at this level and knows how to get results in the top flight, but a poor run of form that saw him leave the Britannia Stadium earlier in the campaign will be a concern. That isn’t the only issue though, with Wilson taking aim at what Hughes did on the training pithch during a Twitter Q&A with fans in 2016.
The 30-year-old, who now plays for Sunderland, replied when asked in which position he would rather player: “Centre-back mate. But it would actually help if we ever did any defensive training, which we don’t.”
Considering Southampton have shipped 44 goals in 30 Premier League matches this term and let in three against Newcastle United last week, those comments from Wilson don’t exactly inspire confidence that they will tighten up at the back under Hughes in the coming weeks.
