David Moyes’ second stint at West Ham United got off to a dream start on New Year’s day as the Hammers crushed Bournemouth 4-0 at London Stadium.
Felipe Anderson got himself on the scoresheet for the first time this season during the demolition, and comparisons with Marko Arnautovic under Moyes have already been made in light of his fine display.
What’s the word?
Roshane Thomas, a journalist covering West Ham United for The Athletic, has made a big claim about Anderson.
While speaking in his Q&A column after the game on Wednesday, Thomas suggested a pattern akin to the transformation Arnautovic enjoyed under Moyes could unfold in east London.
“That’s Anderson first goal of the season. Remember when Moyes got Arnautovic firing? Well he could have the same effect with Anderson.”
In a separate quote he said: “I reckon Moyes will get the best out of him in the same way he got Arnautovic firing.”
Arnautovic 2.0
The Scotsman’s impact on the then £20m man was one of the major sub plots of the season. After opening his account against Chelsea on December 9th 2017 he went on to score 11 times in the Premier League, providing West Ham with the firepower they needed to stay up.
The Austria international was made the focal point of the attack at centre-forward and he fully reaped the rewards of that switch.
Perhaps it’s a little premature to suggest Anderson could be set for a similar reawakening based off one performance but the evidence from the Bournemouth victory is telling.
It’s the dawn of a new decade in the Premier League, but how much do you know about the last 10 years?
Moyes pushed Anderson into an advanced central position just off Sebastien Haller, encouraging him to make an impact through the middle rather than from the left hand side.
That both Haller and Anderson were on the scoresheet suggests it’s a tactic that could facilitate an improvement in both players, with the latter becoming the Arnautovic-esque figure of Moyes’ second stint.
Upon Moyes’ appointment Mark Noble came out in support of the new coach and alluded to his man-management abilities in a passionate message to the supporters, per WHUFC.com: “He got players playing to their full potential and I hope and believe he can do it again.”
Those words could serve as a prescient indication of what’s to come with Anderson.
