Atletico Madrid have confirmed that defender Robin Le Normand has been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury following the game against Real Madrid.

Towards the end of his team's 1-1 draw against the Spanish champions in La Liga on Sunday, Le Normand collided with Madrid player Aurelien Tchouameni. He received medical treatment on the pitch but was allowed to finish the match.

The 27-year-old, who joined Atletico from Real Sociedad during the summer, was sent for further scans to determine the severity of the injury and the club have revealed the results.
WHAT ATLETICO SAID
A statement from the club read: "Robin Le Normand suffered a severe blow to the head in the final minutes of the Madrid derby, for which he underwent a series of tests and was assessed by specialists who determined that he suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) with subdural haematoma.
"In the process of returning our player to competition, the guidelines set out in the protocol established for this type of trauma will be followed."

Atletico will travel to Portugal without the injured centre-back for their Champions League match against Benfica on Wednesday, followed by a La Liga clash against Le Normand's former team Real Sociedad.
