When Vertonghen inadvertently turned the ball into his own net five minutes before the end of the last 16 clash, Mbappe purposefully ran straight over to the veteran centre-back before going to celebrate what soon became the winning goal with his team-mates. A word or two was said in Vertonghen's direction and Mbappe ended up being spoken to by the referee afterwards.

It wasn't a moment in isolation from Mbappe. Some bad blood had already been brewing between the pair after Vertonghen appeared to accuse the Frenchman of diving to try and win a penalty earlier in the game. He clearly took exception to that and had confronted his opponent about it, deliberately and aggressively bumping him.
